Red Bull Schlittentag Turns A Simple Day of Sledding into a Creative Masterpiece

Maximus Bullious Dominate Mt. Hood Skibowl for Crazy Sledding Competition

On Saturday, March 30th, daredevils from across the Pacific Northwest showed off their creativity, ingenuity and stellar team spirit at the Red Bull Schlittentag event.  Red Bull Schlittentag, German for “sledding day,” allowed teams to debut unique homemade sleds and race them down the slopes of Mt. Hood Skibowl.  Twenty-Five teams raced their crafts in front of spectators and judges in hopes of winning overall best team.  Criteria for judging included both speed and creativity; judges included Jackass star Ehren McGhehey, fabricator and President of 503 Motoring Tim Walbridge, and local bar manager Tony Toupin of the Ratskeller. The course consisted of a steep drop in ramp, two rollers, and a jump at the finish line.

Team “The Olympic Spirit”, composed of members of the Mt. Hood Skibowls’ Ski School and Demo Shop, started the day as an early leader, with solid marks in creativity and a blistering fast time of 7.83 seconds, the fastest of the event, leaving them in a respectable third place. Coming in second, the “Washington Redskins” created a craft that resembled a primitive canoe.  The judges loved their creativity, as one of the pilots stood during the run, while beating a drum.  Ultimately however, it was the roman chariot themed sled “Maximus Bullions” who ended up on top.  Dressed as roman soldiers, and riding a chariot down the snow, the team harnessed lightening fast speed, creative costumes, and an epic finish, to secure the top spot. When asked about their run, team captain David Rusnac said “We came from the past and conquered the Schlittentag trophy. We had our swords and our spears ready for action, and we definitely flew down that hill with all we had.”  While not quite cracking the top 3, Team “Pumpin Potassium” earned the coveted prize of best crash of the day; when one of the team members, dressed as a weight lifting banana, ended up sandwiched under his co-pilot after a botched landing on the jump.
