Powder Alert: Midday Friday through Midday Saturday

1st Powder Alert of the season for Mt. Hood Skibowl!

A cold system drops out of British Columbia, picks up some moisture off the Pacific, and then runs into the Cascades Friday and Saturday.

The details:

Snow showers turn to steady snow Friday around noon or so.  So picks up quite a bit after sunset, continues through the night, and then tapers off to flurries by Saturday afternoon.  A few more flurries for Sunday too.

  • 8-10" is likely at Gov't Camp and the base area by Saturday afternoon
  • 10-15" on the Upper Bowl by Saturday afternoon

Snow levels go up and down a bit next week.  Right now it appears we'll see a warmer storm Monday night and Tuesday, then a sharp drop in snow levels Wednesday-Thursday next week.

Here's my forecast for snow at Mt. Hood over the next 7 Days:

So now we're heading into the 2nd half of November and we're all getting anxious for an opening.  I can say something here I probably wouldn't say on TV...our long range forecast models are ALL over the place with the weather pattern beyond next Wednesday.  Roll the dice and get out the dartboard.  Right now confidence is unusually low.  Sometimes we have a real good idea of the general pattern ahead (cool/wet or warm/dry for example), but at times like this it's very uncertain.  Some of those models put us back into warm ridging late next week through early Thanksgiving Week.  Others push more wet/cool systems through (lots of snow!).  Over the last two days we've even seen a few model runs showing an arctic blast even in the lowlands for snow in the valleys.  Stay tuned...
